Cormier was always going to be suspended, the interesting part will be the length of time when the offical suspension is handed down. I agree completely on this being a turning point essentially that if handled incorrectly, could lead to serious repercussions in so far as the involvement of outside parties such as the police in governing the sport.

I stand by what I was saying in our twitters: Leagues/Hockey peers need to get tough and make a stand to discourage any such further behaviours. If they continue to be wishy-washy in their handling of such matters (indeed, even glorifying it - see Cormier's elbow hit in the CAN v SWEDEN game and the lack of true punishment. Oh and Cormier was named team Captain at that tournament - what message does THAT send), then means outside the League will be encouraged and needed.

This is a horrible incident that the league can turn into an opportunity. If it doesn't act swiftly and decisively, they'll open doors that they may never be able to close (re: outside involvement) and give up some of their self-management power.

The main reason I'd prefer 'in house' management of the issue though is the time it takes for any criminal proceeding. The longer such issues drag on, the worse it is for the sport, the league, the players and the fans.

Act fast QMJHL...

PS: I'd be interested to see if Civil proceedings for damages occur should the injuries prove to have long term repercussions. (See: Moore, Bertuzzi, NHL)

edit: As I typed this a news article has come up - it appears Cormier has been suspended indefinately. Good.
